How do you like living in Boston? What do you do when you are not working?

I love Boston! I like cooking with ingredients from the Haymarket, walking through Boston Commons, dancing, and karaoke.

What is your academic background? What research experience did you have before grad school?

I majored in Biology and Data Science at College of Charleston, where very few students had strong interest and/or training in bioinformatics. However, many labs at CofC and the nearby Medical University of South Carolina need people who do. I was a little eager to try different research, so I joined seven different labs as an undergraduate. I usually worked on two projects at a given time: one that was my idea, and one that was a good idea. (Just kidding.)

What advice would you give to college students who are interested in a PhD in genomics/bioinformatics?

My advice for first- and second-year college students is to take a programming course. Then, ask your favorite professor or advisor about bioinformatics at your institution. If you are a US citizen, I also recommend REU programs regardless of prior research experience. More senior students should try to present and publish (or, if published, reread) their undergraduate research. Among many other benefits, it will help you confidently discuss your projects during grad school interviews. Lastly, have confidence and don't joke about the quality of your ideas. Good luck!
