What is your academic background? What research experience did you have before grad school?

I completed my undergraduate education at University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) where I studied bioinformatics and computer science. Prior to joining BIG, I was involved in several different research projects ranging from developing computational methods for RNA structure prediction to mining social media data to learn more about behavioral disorders.

What is your research area and why is it exciting?

I study how spatial distribution and physical interactions of cells play a role in cancer. It is exciting to develop methods that incorporate both imaging and genomic information to uncover a comprehensive understanding of tumor microenvironment and aid in the development of novel therapeutics.

Why did you choose BIG?

I wanted to choose a PhD program where I could explore additional research areas that integrated biology and computer science. The BIG program provided me with opportunities to work with researchers from several institutions and hospitals including HMS, Broad, and MGH as well as to take courses I am interested in at MIT and different Harvard schools.

What advice would you give to college students who are interested in a PhD in genomics/bioinformatics?

Take advantage of your college resources: approach investigators whose work interests you, secure summer internships or on campus lab opportunities, attend guest speaker seminars through the bioinformatics or biology department, take upper level electives to get a better understanding of the field, and develop a strong foundation in statistics and computer science.

How do you like living in Boston? What do you do when you are not working?

I love Boston! There is something to do every weekend. I enjoy eating my way through different neighborhoods (cannolis from North End, ramen in Harvard square, and BBQ in Fenway). I am an avid sports fan and enjoy playing basketball.
